Nicotine Can Cause Skin Death
The nicotine found in cigarettes can actually kill healthy skin cells. It also impairs the natural healing process by tightening the blood vessels and restricting blood flow. You need healthy skin for a good result and optimal circulation for a healthy and quick recovery. The bottom line is that smoking in the days prior to your tummy tuck surgery can have a detrimental affect on post-op healing.
If you’re a regular smoker, even refraining from smoking for several days before surgery may not help enough. Your best bet is to put your last cigarette out several weeks before your surgical date. I require all patients to avoid nicotine completely (not just smoking but any patches or gum too) for at least 6 weeks before AND after surgery.

Smokers are at greater risk for a range of cardiovascular problems, and when undergoing surgery, heart function is of special priority. Nonsmokers are significantly less likely to experience heart problems during or after their tummy tuck than smokers.

Ideally, smokers interested in getting a tummy tuck should quit smoking as soon as they begin to plan their surgery. Using your tummy tuck as motivation to quit smoking can be an excellent way of preparing for the healthy lifestyle that will allow you to best maintain your new look. Kicking the smoking habit sooner rather than later is not only better for your health, but helps ensure the best tummy tuck results.
